Module: Using Feedback to Foster Discussion

Teachers’ responses to students can have a profound effect on the amount of authentic discussion in their classrooms. This module assists with several “teaching moves” that can be used to foster rich dialogue.

In this module, you will:

  • Describe the differences between monologic and dialogic discourse.
  • Explore the ways in which teacher responses to student utterances can shape classroom discourse.
  • Explore the relationship between dialogic teaching and academic achievement.
  • Identify and apply “teaching moves” that can foster dialogic discourse when responding to students.
