Module: Affirming Difference and Valuing Background Knowledge

This module is designed to help you reflect on your own attitudes toward difference, take proactive steps to learn about (and from) students and families, and build students’ background knowledge into instruction.

In this module, you will:

  • Explain the importance of affirming difference.
  • Contrast an affirmative attitude toward difference with a deficit perspective.
  • Identify forces that can impede a teacher’s ability to affirm difference, and how to navigate them.
  • Explore the connection between affirming difference and valuing student background knowledge.
